Iran - Report on Zabol prison

Reporton Zabol prison: substandard conditions

Around 800 prisoners are kept in harsh and inhumane conditions in Zabol Prison.
According to a prisoner that has recently been released from this jail the hygiene, medical and treatment conditions were near zero. However, corruption is rampant and much of the residents’ rights can be bought through money and bribes to prison authorities, even in-person meetings. Prison authorities even demand the prisoners to pay for daily matters such as repairing the rooms, water faucets, shower heads and… Drugs in this prison are distributed and facilitated through bribes to prison authorities.
Any kind of protest to these conditions will face serious reactions, torture and even beatings which are very common in this prison. At times after a prisoner is beaten they chain them to a specific column and they are returned to the ward after their wounds are healed.
“For example, a few days ago a prisoner by the name of Mehdi Souri was severely beaten for his verbal dispute with the prison personnel. He was tied to the column for three days and returned to the ward after pleading and begging,” this informed source said.
