Report from
Zahedan prison with 350 on death row
Zahedan prison,
with over 2,000 prisoners and around 350 on death row, is one of the largest
centers of human rights violations in Iran. Ward 3 of this prison is especially
designed for political-security prisoners, holding over 320 prisoners.
The
population in this prison is always more than the capacity of the site and the
number of beds in the wards is very low, forcing many of the prisoners to sleep
on the ground at nights. The personnel and prison guards’ behavior towards the
prisoners is very violent and illegal, with beatings of prisoners becoming a
daily matter.
An informed
source reported, “Prison guards in March became suspicious of a prisoner by the
name of Ismaeel Rezaie, 28, who had recently returned from leave. They were
suspicious of the prisoner possessing drugs and they chained him to a corner in
the prison for three days. Finally it became clear that the prisoner possessed
no drugs and when he threatened to protest about this issue they began beating
him and broke two of his ribs.
