Iran: civil activist Saeed Shirzad sentenced to 5 years behind bars

Saeed Shirzad, a civil activist detained in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, has been sentenced to five years behind bars. This child rights activist was acquitted from the charge of disrupting order yet condemned for assembly and collusion, an informed source said.
Shirzad was arrested on June 2, 2014 at his office in Tabriz oil refinery (northwest Iran) and first transferred to Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison. Sometime later he was exiled to Gohardasht Prison for protesting and following up on prisoners’ service needs. There was no court hearing held for this prisoner and he never went through the process of temporary detention.
This child rights activist provided education to child workers and deprived children living on the streets, and charged with providing support and education to children of political prisoners. He was first arrested on August 21, 2012 when he travelled to East Azerbaijan Province (northwest Iran) to provide aid to the earthquake stricken people of the area.
